12th More info from Canon about the 5D mk4 C-log video feature [Canon]
April
20th The C-log firmware is announced [Canon CPN – Canon US] – It’s a chargeable upgrade (at a Canon authorised service centre) and doesn’t seem to offer many of the rumoured extra features.
A major firmware update for the EOS 5D Mark IV has been announced by Canon Europe this week, which sees Canon Log (C Log) being added to the DSLR providing enhanced dynamic range and easier colour grading…
Canon Log is a staple feature in Canon’s Cinema EOS range and is designed to deliver an 800 percent increase in dynamic range, minimising the loss of detail in the darkest and brightest parts of the image. When using C Log on the EOS 5D Mark IV, an ISO setting of 400 will deliver the largest dynamic range of 12 stops, perfect for shooting in difficult lighting conditions.
Ensuring maximum freedom in post-production, C Log alters the image processing data after the image has been captured. As a result, videographers and filmmakers will find it easy to colour match with footage shot on other cameras, including those in the Canon Cinema EOS range. The footage from any camera can be combined and colour matched in a single colour grading process, which provides a final global colour and seamless feel, regardless of whether the film is shot on different cameras.
C Log also reduces noise, particularly in shadow areas that can appear during colour grading. The new firmware makes the colour grading of footage more flexible via the production of accurate colours with minor colour bias.
ABOUT THE FIRMWARE
The firmware update will be available as a chargeable upgrade exclusively via Canon authorised service centres.
13th On the Canon US site there is new firmware listed. The following notes are shown. This does not seem to be the video oriented update mentioned in March
Changes in the Firmware Firmware Version 1.0.4 incorporates the following fixes and improvements:
- Fixes a phenomenon in which a red-coloured area may appear at the bottom-centre of a captured image when shooting in bulb mode or during a long exposure.
- Fixes a phenomenon in which the autofocus may not respond when the autofocus is initiated via pressing the shutter button, the AF-ON button or the AE lock button when configured in the custom control menu.
- Enhances the reliability of communications between the camera and SD card.
- Fixes incorrect wording on the Finnish language menu screen.
Firmware Version 1.0.4 is for cameras with firmware Version 1.0.3 or earlier. If your camera’s firmware is already Version 1.0.4, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

25th One of the 5D4 features is that you can record Dual Pixel data. If you set the camera to record it (doubles the size of RAW files) you need to process images with DPP.
There is a Canon articleexplaining the dual pixel AF adjustment functions.
Canon says:
In addition to all the adjustments you can perform using Canon’s RAW processing software to RAW image files, EOS 5D Mark IV images shot with Dual Pixel RAW active also allow the following adjustments:
Image Microadjustment
Make subtle changes to slightly alter the plane of sharpest detail in an image, using depth information. You can microadjust the sharpest detail forward (toward the camera) or backward at the subject.
Bokeh Shift
Take out-of-focus foreground and background information, and shift it slightly (side-to-side in a horizontal shot), using sliders in DPP to vary the range of adjustment. The primary, focused-upon subject remains essentially unaffected — so the out-of-focus areas do in fact shift a bit. This can be easily seen once you bring Dual Pixel RAW images into your computer.
Ghost Reduction
Select an area of the frame having flare or ghost images from light sources which are just ouside the visible frame, and DPP can process the image to reduce these aberrations in some cases. You select the area by drawing a box around it, on-screen, in DPP’s preview window.
Just how well this is going to work remains to be seen…

Capturing up to 21 RAW images or unlimited JPEGs in a single burst, you’ll always be ready for the next frame. For when discretion is needed – such as capturing breaking news or animals in their natural habitat – the camera features ‘Silent Single’ and ‘Silent Continuous’ modes, offering shooting with minimal noise.
Take the jump to 4K movie-making
With the EOS 5D Mark IV, 4K movie-making is open to anyone who wants to use the power of video to tell the bigger picture. A truly versatile camera, it features DCI 4K (4096 x 2160) at 30/25/24 fps shooting and provides the ability to extract 8.8MP JPEG images from 4K videos, making it a great companion for those wanting to easily switch from video to stills. Delivering quality footage has never been more important with streaming services increasingly demanding content be shot using the latest technology in the field. The EOS 5D Mark IV brings this advancement in the form of a video DSLR with internal 4K, 120p HD, Dual Pixel CMOS AF, time lapse movie and new HDR movie mode.

The plot thickens … several comments assure me that the pic -is- real.
Time to get working on a photo of my 5Ds… ;-)
15th The ‘image of a camera’ below is likely a fake – at PR they have comments from the person who photoshopped it ;-)
Just when I was fearing that the art of faking unannounced products was a dying art…
12th A few more specs appear [CR]
7fps / WiFi / GPS / 422 / 8bit 500mbps MJPEG
10th Thanks to the anonymous sender of this image of a camera ;-)
Note the different prism bump (for GPS/WiFi I expect) and the change in name model label.
This goes with the suggestion that there has been a re-jig of port layout.
—
A few more possible specs push the 5D4 to 30MP… [CR]
30mp, Compact Flash/SD Card Slots
24/30fps @ 4K, 60fps @ 1080, 120fps @ 720
USB 3, Cable release port moved to the front of the camera where the “Mark XX” badge was.
A lot more touchscreen functionality than the EOS-1D X Mark II
Other ergonomic changes, such as a new “locking switch” on the rear of the camera.
A photo should be doing the rounds by the time I get up in the morning – but I’m working away, so updates may be delayed
9th Info about the 5D4 is still thin on the ground – There is a suggestion [CR] that the body price will be somewhat lower than the 5D3 came in at, and that we’ll see two kit otions, one with the new 24-105 mk2 and one with the f4 24-70.
I expect some leaked documentation to appear within a couple of weeks of the launch, and maybe a box photo or some more distinct shots of it being tested…
—
If you’re looking for a printer to print your new 5D mk4 photos, I’ve just finished a very long review of Canon’s PRO-2000 printer – this follows on from my recent PRO-1000 review
3rd Canon have a ‘fivegraphy‘ event in Japan on the 27th, celebrating the EOS 5D range. [Goog xlt]
I wonder what else they might be including…
The image from the page (with shadows opened out a bit) shows a camera with a different bump on top at the end.
Is it the old 5D or have they sneaked in the mk4?
July
30th In ‘not real news’, several sites are creating product pages for the 5D mk4, which would be why we have posts on this page going back to 2011…
I’d suggest that our 2011 ones are about as relevant for 5D4 details as those empty product pages popping up recently ;-)
And yes, we have had a 5D mk5 page for some time ;-)
27th Solid leaks for the 5D4 are still lacking. A ‘retail source’ suggests [CR] that the camera will be 30MP – somewhat higher than the ‘currently popular’ 26/28MP.
We’re close enough to a launch that some large suppliers will have been given briefings, but only at very senior levels in the company, and then on pain of nasty things happening to their business, if they tell anyone ;-)
21st A good date for the 5D4? Thursday the 25th of August… [CR] expects a 24-105 f4L IS mk2 to appear with it.
—
I was kindly sent some screen grabs from a US TV show where there are a couple of Canon DSLRs being used for close shots, mounted on a golf cart. It seems that the footage from these cameras looked just a bit too good for a 5D3.
I’ve no idea about the show, “America’s Got Talent” or how good footage you really need to show whether it does…
However, here are crops from the screen shots I was sent [thanks]

20th The flow of info about the 5D mk4 seems to be about to start.
The speed an ‘it will have something new’ rumour went round yesterday shows the level of interest (or desperation to fill page space ;-)
OK, I’ll bite … I’m hoping to see a proper RAW based RGB histogram, accurate clipping indication and a usable ETTR exposure mode.
I suspect it could be rolled out elsewhere as a firmware update, where I would find it of great use with my 5Ds…
For more ‘real’ info, I’m testing the Laowa 12mm f/2.8 lens on my 5Ds and it is rather good – see a sample pic on the lens rumour page.
UPDATE – see full 12mm review
14th Is this the 5D4 on its way? An Indonesian certification authority mentions a new Canon camera manufactured in Japan, with WiFi and GPS [DCI via Goog xlt]
Canon registration contents
– Equipment: Digital camera
– Model name: Canon DS126601
– Manufacturing: Japan
– Date: July 1, 2016
Could be something else, but we’re in the right timeframe for the 5D mk4
11th A 5D4 ‘spec list’ seems to be doing the rounds – no idea of the source. Looks generally plausible…
28MP, 9fps, 4k video etc etc ;-)
See the full list [CR]
5th It’s suggested that the 5D4 will have a CFast 2.0 slot and a SDXC UHS-II slot [CR]
Seems reasonable if you want to shoot 4k video
June
15th A new patent for a 24-105mm F4 lens appears [EG-xlt] most likely the Mk2 version to appear with the 5D mk4 this summer – deatils on the main lens page
8th A photo from a video shoot might show (only just) the 5D mk4. Read the background to the photo at [EHD]
3rd One from the numerology department? – it was pointed out to us that there is a space for a 5th camera on the UK Canon pro dslr page. The corresponding ‘enhusiast’ page fills the row with 4.
Yes folks, there really is that little info about any new 5D series camera yet…
May
22nd Strong suggestions that the 5D4 is out for testing and that it will have 4k video [CR]
13th It seems that the 32MP rumour has been circulating for a few days –
A reminder about the important note at the top of the page…
and another to myself to treat anonymised emails with suitable amounts of scepticism… ;-)
Sites and sources unwilling to say who they really are should always get extra large pinches of salt.
12th We’re sent a suggestion that the 5D4 will be “32MP with a 24MP mode” and be shown at Photokina.
From an unknown source, supposedly via a Canon contact. I note that most wishlists and the like (aka rumoured 5D4 specs) put the MP at a more reasonable ~24MP.
32MP isn’t actually that much higher, and given the ability of the 5Ds to shoot at a reasonable rate, it’s not beyond capabilities.
April
27th Whilst still with a whiff of ‘wish list’ about them, some plausible specifications for the 5D4 appear [CR]
24.2MP Sensor | 61 AF Points (41 crosstype) | DIGIC 7+ (Single) |7fps | ISO 100-51,200 (expandable options)
3.2″ touchscreen LCD | CFast/SD card slots | Wifi | GPS built-in | BG-E20 battery grip | LP-E20 battery
Slight weight reduction
22nd It seems the 5D4 might have a different design of battery grip [CR]
Nothing much new has appeared for a while now, so I’m moving the 5D4 to the August ‘slot’ and the 6D 2 back to 2017. The March 5D3 shortages seem to have amounted to not a lot, so still no imminent announcement…
4th A few more hints about the 5D4 – 4k video, WiFi, GPS and touchscreen [CR]
So, what to make of this? It doesn’t contradict anything I’ve been told (which is frankly not a lot).
There will by now be quite a market waiting for the 5D4, since by Photokina (20th Sept.) the 5D mk3 will have been round longer than any other Canon DSLR apart from the 7D (not exact but see the timeline below).
As ever, read the note to new visitors at the top of the page…
I see some sites still going in for the ‘We said this first’ contest. That old saying [WP] about monkeys, typewriters and Shakespeare springs to mind… ;-)
2016 April
2nd The upcoming camera is likely the 5D4 – not 5DX. Still no real sign of an impending announcement, so maybe the August slot for Photokina [CR]
March
19th The ‘not until the 1D X mk2 is shipping’ line continues [CR] along with the suggestion that 5D4 video performance will exceed the 1D X 2
4th In info that suggests a 5D4 is on its way, several dealers have suggested [CR] that the delivery times for the 5D3 have stretched in the way that often happens a month or two before an announcement.
I often mention the change in the nature of rumours that takes place when something becomes a bit more ‘real’. This is such a thing and I suspect people may well have a 5D4 in their hands by June. If so, then I’m hoping to see some distinctly better quality 5D3 replacement rumours by the end of the month ;-)
3rd A ‘there will be a 6D2 instead of a 5D4’ rumour seems to be doing the rounds.
When I get sent several links using obfucsated email addresses, you can bet it’s probably just made up to stir the pot and generate traffic somewhere ;-)
February
28th Lots of sites taking bits of rumours and conflating them with ‘certainty’ about the 5D 4 (or 5D X) – All worthy of the cr1 rating they get at [CR]
Still no signs yet of that distinct change in rumour detail/quality that you get not long before a real announcement.
26th Yes it really is the first 5D4 mention of the year (of note). With a suggestion that there won’t be anything until after the 1D X mk2 ships in April/May and that there will be a 4k video model [CR]
In what I consider just hanging on a bit too long, one comment suggested that it would actually appear in what was the August pre-photokina announcement slot. I’m expecting that one as far more likely for something to replace the 6D/100D.

17th Hints of a March arrival for the 5D4? [CR]
There is also mention of a potential 5Ds update a bit sooner than might be thought – See 5Ds mk2 page for more general coverage of what I still expect to be a 2017/8 camera.
At the moment I can see no good reason whatsoever to hurry the update of the 5Ds?
November
27th Lots more ‘early next year’ rumours going round and 24MP seems the latest preferred sensor size and probably not 4k video.
17th Still no really firm information on any 5D mk4, but there is a suggestion that the camera may get a touch screen or folding screen or neither at [CR]
See the latest view of the Canon timeline on this page – lots of things could be updated…
September
29th Keep an eye out for links to an Italian ‘news clickbait’ site which seems to have dredged up some of the earlier rumours from this year about a 5D4 and a 5D4c for video
“Canon EOS 5D Mark IV will have a 28mp full frame sensor, 12 fps, Dual Pixel autofocus system AF III, crop mode (or clipping) to 1.3x, to simulate the sensor size of the EOS 1D old series, or 1.6x , to simulate the size of Canon’s APS-C sensor, anti-technology flickr; sensitivity from 100 to 204.800iso, 409,600 in extended mode.
Canon EOS 5D Mark IV c: 18MP full frame sensor, very useful for optimizing the performance at high ISO and burst. Dual Pixel III AF autofocus system with 61 points of focus, ISO sensitivity from 100 to 204,800, 4k video. ”
If you really must click then turn the sound down first

August
20th So, there will be a replacement for the 5D mk3… that much the rumours seem agreed on.
However, the timing seems to be fluctuating between dates in September/October and ‘not until next year’.
With no August announcement for the 1D X mk2 I’d suggest the 5D4 (or X if you are an avid DPReview forum follower) is becoming more of a 2016 product.
I’d put a side bet on an October announcement and shipping by the start of December in small quantities.
Truth is, I’m afraid I’ve seen nothing convincing one way or the other for a while.
I’m currently rewriting/reformatting this whole site from scratch (a vast job, hundreds of pages to go…), and had to look at some of the rumour archives covering the last ten years. It seems that rumours were never that reliable (surely not! :-) ), but there is a consistent change in the variety and range of rumour sources once you get to 3-4 weeks out from a product launch.
Canon stuff doesn’t often leak out anyway, and in fact, never did that much.
As sales continue to decline, I’m expecting replacement cycles to be waiting more for real advances in technologies.
I’m expecting to still have some rumour pages running when the 5Ds is replaced, but what the state of the DSLR market will be like then is a big unknown.
14th The 5D X trundles on at DPR
6th The 5D X stuff is being repeated widely – watch out for non attributed versions being picked up by sites, and subsequently being picked up elsewhere as ‘proof’ of the original rumours.
All good fun – and a good sign that a lot of people are looking for a 5D mk4.
I’ll be writing up more about the 5Ds before long (it gets even better for my work as I get used to it), but I’m minded to suggest that it is -not- the update many 5D3 users are looking for. It’s more than ‘just’ a big sensor in a 5D3, but I’d suspect that the 5D4 (X) will be a lot more generally useful, unless you are into big prints.
5th Another mention of the 5D3 replacement [DPR] still calling it a 5DX and putting an announcement (along with the 1D X mk2) around the US Photoplus show in October.
Nothing else backs this up at the moment, so keep the usual big pinch of salt ready.
2015 July
17th The 5D4 has been referred to as a 5D X a few times of late – this seems to come from a DPreview forum post some time ago.
See a mention at [PB] 28MP
If you follow rumours for any time, you’ may see the same things popping up in cycles. Sometimes it’s the same rumour, recycled. It takes a week or two’s gap and an unnattributed mention and it starts up again ;-)
Interesting to see the 5D X name though…
12th A report (thanks) of 5D4 testing, where there is still a mix between 18 and 24MP. 24MP is the likely final outcome, with the lower MP sensor testing AF speed and buffer management issues (less than 8FPS is the likely shooting speed)
If this is so, then it suggest that the 5D4 launch is still some way off?
June
13th There has been little talk of the 5D4 of late, so take the latest [CR] with suitable care.
5D Mark IV after EOS-1D X Mark II
Q1 2016 shiping
4K video
New Flash system for 1D X II and 5D4
Sensors – 18MP to 28MP options
5DS / EOS 5DS R model split might apply to 5D4
New DIGIC processor
So what’s been mentioned in the past?
18MP – April and Feb | 4k, 28MP, post 1Dx2 and flash system – March
All good stuff, but nothing that wouldn’t make up many a ‘wishlist’ I’ve been sent.
May
19th Indications that the 5D4 is out for testing [CR] with select photographers. No actual camera info as yet.
With 2016 being an Olympic year, both the Nikon D5 and Canon 1DX mk2 should be available before they start.
Check the timeline further down the page for how old different models are, and also why a Digic 7 chip looks relatively unlikely for a bit?
April
12th Some low MP specs sent for for the 5D4:
18MP, 100-204,800 ISO, 61 AF (all cross), 12 fps, Dual CFast cards, 4K Video Capture.
No dates or any other useful info, so this looks to be the same as at [NC] and heavy on the wishful thinking ;-)
10th A suggestion that the 5D4 will use dual readout technology, similar to the new C300 mk2 to aid video performance. [CR]
March
14th We’re told (thanks) that the 5D mk4 won’t be along until later in the year, not until the 5Ds/R is shipping in reasonable numbers. Part of the timing depends on just how well it sells and to whom – 5D3 sales in Europe have been holding up well, which might push the 5D4 back beyond the update of the 1D X.
This may or may not fit in with info (thanks) from the far east, that the 5D4 is due in August/September and would come in at 28MP, 9fps and with 4k video. Both the 5D4 and 1D X update would see the launch of a ‘significant’ advance in Canon’s flash control capabilities. This would also include adapters/controllers and firmware updates for recent models to make more use of the functionality.
As someone who uses flash rather rarely on my ageing 1Ds3 (I don’t really do ‘people photography’ in our business ;-), I’ve no idea what areas this could cover?
Both rumours are out beyond my normal ~3 month ‘reality window’, so deserve a suitable scepticism at the moment
February
23rd Is the camera mentioned yesterday the 5D C mentioned earlier this month [5th]

8th If more evidence that the 5Ds is ‘not the 5Dmk4 you are looking for’ was needed, we’re told that its sensor has been specifically tuned for low ISO performance, dropping off markedly at the higher settings. See the 5Dspage for more.
5th In a more ‘out there’ rumour (thanks)we’re told that the ‘general purpose’ 5D4 will come along with 5D C specialist video DSLR. 1D C sales have not been good enough to get the return on development of a new version.
I’ve no idea about this one, since video on DSLRs just has no place in any of my work? Any comment welcome.
1st More 5Ds and 5Ds R details emerge. This isn’t the 5D mk4.
January
30th Some possible 5Ds details appear – 50.2MP and two versions (with and without AA filter).
With this news, many looking for the next 5D may wonder where the line is going, however we’ve just been told [thanks] that the 5D mark 4 will be announced in August, where it will feature much improved video and stills performance, and a ‘modest’ increase in MP.
As ever, take a pinch of salt with all rumours for more than a few months away.
At [CR] there is some more info about a potential 5D4 that:
“…will focus on being a lowlight event and sports type of camera with good enough image quality for pretty much anything else you throw at it. The camera could also be the next Canon DSLR to get 4K video recording, along with new video features.”
9th Three versions of a new 5D are suggested [CR] an updated 5D4 and two 5Ds models with and without AA filtering, at ~53MP
2014 December
30th With a rumoured high MP DSLR from Canon (main rumour page) I note that at [CR] they have been told that the camera could be the 5D mk4, which could also fit in with suggestions that the 6D2 will move upmarket.
November
22nd We can close up the rumour pages – the Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators and Camera Prophet Extraordinary, the great Krockwell has spoken and the 5D4 will be launched on March 17th 2015
Don’t rush to check if you see this appearing elsewhere though, it’s a boilerplate spacefiller page with ads ;-)
6th In a dealer sourced rumour [thanks], we’re again told that the 5D mk4 is due for launch at the start of February (in time for CP+ 12th-15th) along with ‘another Canon Pro DSLR’ around the same time.
I’d note that Canon tends to only launch one major camera at a time, and if there is to be a high end DSLR, such as a 1D X mk2, I’d have thought it would be announced before a 5D4?
Perhaps time for the EOS 3D again? (one of our longest running rumours ;-)
BTW, that modular Canon camera that was mentioned – we had pics in 2008 – see below
August
17th In Germany it seems that Calumet aren’t expecting the 5D4 this year, since with an offer on the mk3 until the end of August, they are guaranteeing to buy back your 5D3 if a 5D4 appears. [Thanks for the pic!]
June
23rd A product advisory is issued in the US for the 5D3, relating to the LCD light leak issue [5D3 page]
21st Both the 5D4 and 1D X mk2 are to be announced January/February of next year, we’re told (thanks).
The 1D X mk2 will be announced fiirst (potentially later this year), but will ship later.
Both will incorporate significant advances in sensor design, which mean that there will be no high MP ‘3D’ class body this year.
The info suggested that this was what was being tested in the studios we heard about last month, and that elements of it woud appear in the upcoming 7D mk2, but that the real advance would not be seen until next year.

2013 February
15th All we’ve heard of late is that there won’t be a new FF camera shipping in 2013 from Canon
2012 December
22nd The favourite higher spec camera rumours at the moment are for something to compete with the D800 to appear in 2013.
March
21st In what will become a long thread, I note a 5D4 ‘discussion’ on POTN
1st 5d mk3 rumours finally look entirely real:

OK, what about some 5D Mk4 specs?
2015 Announcement, 4k video, 30+MP, Digic 7 – will still be a proper DSLR with mirror ;-)
2012 February
21st Still no 5D3, although the 2nd of March seems a popular date for launch guestimates at the moment…
2011 August
19th Still no 1Ds4, so the 5D3 is (IMHO) a 2012 camera – 2012 is a Photokina year and if you look at the timeline below, there are plenty of cameras that could be up for replacement.
