Still looking for the new camera rumours…

Very much ‘in development’
I’ve maintained a few rumour pages on this site for longer than any of the xxxrumors.com sites have been around, but I’ve always had a slightly ambivalent attitude towards keeping the pages going.
On one hand, I’d much rather the site was known for the articles and reviews I write, but then again, a look at the traffic stats over the last few years shows that an awful lot of the visitors to the articles first came to the site via a rumours page…
I’ve always accepted that some people have a powerful dislike of rumours, but the fact is that far more people are drawn to them. My own few pages are distinctly provided for interest/entertainment/amusement rather than a serious prediction service.
Most you see is wrong or guesswork
As camera sales volumes have dropped back from the peaks of 2010/11 there has been a similar decline in reliable rumours and the number of people looking for such info.
Experience tells me that not much of the details of the stuff that appears more than six months out from a product announcement will come to pass, unless it’s something pretty obvious, like Canon bringing out a new Rebel/xxxD some 12-18 months after the last one.
The best predictive tool in the past was a look at model release timelines, although the 1D4 -> 1D X step, with the end of the 1Ds3 was one that I let my own interest in what I’d potentially use for my work cloud my attitude to what I heard.

Dates for the start of new models are announcement dates. Canon have had significant variations in launch and availability dates around the world, and have carried on selling superseded models.

I’ve noticed distinct changes in the way rumours appear and spread over recent years – many of the manufacturers have got much better at keeping hold of information (stricter NDAs for example).
I’ll be keeping the pages going for the time being, since I’ve got fairly efficient in updating the pages.
Changes
At some point I’m looking to expand aspects of the Northlight Images site with some specialist forums (colour management, digital black and white), however I suspect that area will be rumour free.
If you’re a regular reader, please do let me know what you like/dislike about the site – just remember that I’m a working commercial photographer and the content is largely written in my spare time ;-)
Update 2017: I’ve working for over a years on a complete update and re-design for the site and now it’s here.
I’ve kept the rumour pages with a whole new way of presenting them.
Hopefully it makes them easier to maintain and still offer timely information.
The forums idea has been put on hold, partly because it took over a year to update all of the content on the site, but mainly because I realised just how much effort they required to run and maintain. I’d rather put that effort into reviews and articles for the site…

Keith explains tilt and shift lenses
Keith has written a book that looks at the many ways that tilt/shift lenses can benefit your photography from a technical and creative point of view. If not in the UK check for import issues and maybe try an on-line bookshop. Keith has no connection with sales of the book.
ISBN 9781785007712
There is also a specific index page on the site with links to all Keith's articles, reviews and videos about using tilt and shift.
We've a whole section of the site devoted to Digital Black and White photography and printing. It covers all of Keith's specialist articles and reviews. Other sections include Colour management and Keith's camera hacks - there are over 1200 articles/reviews here...

That’s a good idea – I’d never had a well defined approach to this ;-)
Keith | Feb 15, 2013 at 4:49 pm
Thanks – the 3880 still has it for me unless you need roll paper or wider, when the Canon 6300/400 is nice (5100 is good but old)
I’ve noticed distinct changes as all the xxxrumor.com site have sprung up – I’m sure that this has contributed somewhat to the overall decline in ‘rumour quality’ ;-)

P.S. Pls bold/italic the ones in the last 3 days…

Rumours are fine, I’d rather go to you than directly to the really-in-it-for-the-money guys…
Plus I like some of your reviews (just have to decide which large format photo printer to get, R3000, R3880, Canon, ???)

Thanks!- now so see what the in-box delivers ;-)

I RELY on you for the rumors (OK I take a peek at other sites too ;-)!
You just have to make friends with some real good inside sources and you’ll be just find. Look at what Renee Ritche of iMore.com does with Apple Rumors! His reputation is spreading and his predictions are very accurate and Apple is not an easy company to crack!

This is the first site I look to for rumors because I find it has great balance between the lines (unlike the brand specific sites). Everything I’ve needed from the other sites can be found and linked to from here.
I find the structure intuitive, but I’ve also been visiting for years, so that may be part of it.

Thanks Chris! I knew there must be someone else who appreciated the layout ;-)

I actually like rumors, and I like how they are formatted by body/lenses and such!

Kim – I believe that mirrors some of my own concerns, that there just isn’t the amount of ‘worthwhile’ rumours these days. I’d have difficulty padding them out for a whole site and I personally prefer not to use ‘special offer deals’ posts.
As to any redesign – that’s a vast job well beyond my core competences, available time, and I’m afraid, finances. The rumours pages are a small part of the site so I’ll continue to try and make them a bit easier to read. My main effort (apart from my ‘real’ work) still goes towards the reviews and articles – there is just me working on the site.
Thanks for taking the time to reply!

Steven – I just noticed what you mean – I’ll tweak the layout to make the link categories clearer
Kim Bentsen | Feb 13, 2013 at 6:46 am
I come here often for rumors, in hope of something not shown on canonrumors.com . The two sites are doing a lot of cross linking, so the content will be similar within 24 hours. Maybe one site is sufficient.
What NI needs more than anything is a new modern design. The pages are too busy, with too much small text clutter. A new design like two of my favorite PC sites would be great:
http://www.tweaktown.com/
http://www.guru3d.com/
A new design will attract more page views.

Hi Keith – I like checking out your rumour pages. A minor issue – I don’t think there is a link to your 1DXs page from your main rumors page. I always have to hunt for it through the 1DX Mk2 page.
Thanks for all the great rumors!
