Changing your business over time and the need for new skills

Professional photography as a changing business – Two videos: Changing your skills, and learning new ones (10m 30s) and changing your business models over time (5m 40s)

Your skills

In the first video Keith looks at how you need to keep learning new skills as professional photographer. What technical skills do you need and what way of learning them best suits you. Why it’s an important part of your business to take time to enjoy taking photos and experiment.

For business skills, will coaching or courses suit you best or will a good book supply all you need. Are professional photography organisations of any real value to your business these days? Do qualifications matter – do they matter to you or your clients.

Your business future

Keith suggests it always time to think about how you will change your professional photography business over time and why

This is both for people thinking of becoming a pro photographer and a reminder for those who are.

He looks at why your photography business will change over time and what you should be thinking about before change is forced on you. Why change is an integral part of running a business and why it will pay to specialise and change what sorts of work you will or won’t do.

Be open to some of the discomfort of change – it’s been a constant part of Keith’s business since 2004 – that’s why his commercial photo business is still running.

Keith explains tilt and shift lenses

Keith has written a book that looks at the many ways that tilt/shift lenses can benefit your photography from a technical and creative point of view. If not in the UK check for import issues and maybe try an on-line bookshop. Keith has no connection with sales of the book.
