Following on from further research and comments here, David Goldstein has written an updated and extended version of his article. This long article is also available in PDF format.
The article looks at the physics that explains the limits faced in camera design. It shows how the fact that light has the characteristics of both particles and waves puts caps on resolution and “film speed” that are not far beyond the performance of current high-end dSLRs, and are already impacting point-and shoot cameras.
