Architecture and the 7D

Some photos in the fog
Yesterday morning I was invited to visit to the new ‘digital media centre’ that’s just opened in Leicester. Phoenix Square has a mix of cinema, work places, production facilities and a range of apartments.
I was not officially wearing my ‘photographer hat’ this visit – since I was representing a local business [...]

1Ds3/7D quick detail check

How sharp are the images from the Canon EOS 7D? I believe there has been some discussion on the matter
It was suggested (thanks) I take some shots at f/6.3 with the 7D and 1Ds3.
Taking both cameras outside, I picked one of my sharper lenses…
Here are some 100% crops, processed in ACR with no sharpening
Taken [...]

Mamiya MF shift lenses on a DSLR body

I’ve got a box of medium format Mamiya lenses for a 645 film camera. Since the chances of me shooting film are pretty negligible (and essentially non-existent for commercial work) I was wondering what to do with these M645 Sekor lenses
I’ve an adapter to fit them on a Canon EF mount camera, but I’ve only [...]

TS-E 24mm – a quick test

A quick test and comparison between the new and original versions of the Canon TS-E 24mm lens

New Canon stuff day…

One of those good days…
First (thanks to Canon UK) a new printer turns up for us to test.
We’ve got the iPF6100 here for a while to do some testing, and hope to have a full review up on the site by mid August.
I was just getting a quick demo of its capabilities. The print you [...]

How old is that Canon lens?

There is a manufacturing date code on the back of most Canon lenses – I’d forgotten this existed until…
I was reading a DPR thread about someone who had sent a Canon lens in for service and was concerned that the bit at the back which usually has a manufacturing date code stamped on it had [...]

TS-E 17 and teleconverter – addendum

The TS-E 17mm f4L lens does not show int the camera EXIF data, when a Canon 2x teleconverter has been used

Using a Teleconverter with a TS-E lens

A quick test using the Canon EF 2x Converter (Teleconverter) with the TS-E 17mm f4L tilt shift lens.
The 2x teleconverter is my concession to rarely needing a long lens when I’m out and about. I’ve got it in the bag for attaching to my 70-200 2.8L IS to get an equivalent 400/5.6 IS lens. If [...]

More TS-E 17mm photos of Leicester

Still no sign of the 24mm T/S lens (in the UK) from Canon…
I was invited to the launch of Design Leicestershire yesterday, and received a rather nice book extolling the virtues of design, and the rather large number of design related businesses we have in this county.
Walking into Leicester, I grabbed shots of two buildings that [...]

Hand held tilt/shift?

Perceived wisdom is that you only use tilt/shift lenses with the aid of a tripod.
I was out in Leicester yesterday, on my way to a business meeting, so I decided to take a few ’snaps’ using the TS-E 17mm hand held.
As I know from other work, it really helps having a ruled focusing screen.
I aim [...]
