Gamut Variations

How printer gamut varies by paper type

This picture shows four instances of a colour photo opened in Photoshop.

Using Photoshop soft proofing (with out of gamut colours set to show as red) the different icc profiles are applied.

Using soft proofing, out of gamut pixels are replaced with red ones.

Four different printer profiles have been used. They are (clockwise from top left)

  1. Epson 1290 Photo Paper
  2. PrintFIX generated icc profile (PGPP)
  3. Epson 1290 Premium Glossy Photo Paper (PGPP)
  4. Epson 1290 Photo Quality Inkjet

Much as you might expect, better papers have wider gamuts and can show more of the original image.

The PrintFIX profile is on a par with the one supplied by Epson.

The image (Old John, Bradgate Park, Leicester) is the same one used in our converting colour to Black and White article.
