ColorMunki software updated to V1.1

Update time for the ColorMunki Photo

We reviewed various aspects of the ColorMunki colour management solution, when it first came out  last year.

X-rite have now updated the software to V1.1 (free update) and added a few changes and bug fixes to what’s available.

The functionality of the monitor calibration option has been enhanced, allowing for more precise setting of luminance values and general usability improvements. We’ve only briefly tested this but it certainly makes the colorMunki much more useful for serious monitor calibration. Getting your monitor luminance correct is often one of the most obvious fixes I mention when asked ‘Why are my prints too dark

The Appset and palette synchronisation function has been expanded to work with CS4 (Appset not Photoshop-see below), although ‘Appset’ is still of relatively limited use if you have any non ColorMunki profiles, which would be just about everyone who has any profiles…

The licensing has been updated to allow unlimited installations for the ColorMunki Photo software – not that it was enforced in the original software, but people found it a pain to follow, so hence the update.

There is a much improved set of training materials available, along with the update, at the ColorMunki web site.

The full feature list from X-rite is as follows.

New Features:

  1. Feature – New License Agreement – ColorMunki Photo version 1.1 now contains the previously announced new end user license agreement allowing users to install and run ColorMunki Photo software on an unlimited number of computers they own. NOTE – This new license agreement does not apply to ColorMunki Design. ColorMunki Design continues to have a 3-computer license agreement.
Benefit – ColorMunki Photo user can now install and use the software application on as many computers as they like. This allows for a greater degree of flexibility as many photographers may use many computers to support their business activities.
  2. Feature – AppSet and Palette Synchronization support for Corel Draw – AppSet functionality now supports CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4 to automatically configure the color management settings and ensure color accuracy when printing.
    Benefit
    • AppSet automatically configures CorelDRAW to use the new printer profiles when making prints increasing product ease of use and reducing the color management knowledge required by the user to achieve color accurate results.
    • Palette Synchronization automatically stores user created color palettes in the correct location so those palettes are automatically available for use within CorelDRAW. This feature makes integration seamless and easy for the user.
  3. Feature – Palette Synchronization support for Corel Draw & Paint – AppSet and palette synchronization functionality now supports CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4, and Corel PainterX software packages.
Benefits – Palette Synchronization automatically stores user created color palettes in the correct location so those palettes are automatically available for use within the Corel applications listed above. This feature makes integration seamless and easy for the user.
  4. Feature – AppSet support for Adobe InDesign CS4 – AppSet functionality for the following new Adobe products:
    a. Adobe InDesign CS4 on Macintosh
    b. Adobe InDesign CS4 on Windows
Note – AppSet support for Adobe Photoshop CS4 was not possible because of a bug with the current release of Photoshop CS4 on both Mac & Windows.
Benefits – AppSet automatically configures Quark 8 to use the new printer profiles when making prints increasing product ease of use and reducing the color management knowledge required by the user to achieve color accurate results.
  5. Feature – Palette Synchronization support for Adobe CS4 – Palette synchronization functionality for the following new Adobe products on both Mac and Win platforms:
    a. Adobe Photoshop CS4
    b. Adobe InDesign CS4
    c. Adobe Illustrator CS4
Benefits – Palette Synchronization automatically stores user created color palettes in the correct location so those palettes are automatically available for use within the support Adobe CS4 applications listed above. This feature makes integration seamless and easy for the user.
  6. Feature – AppSet, palette export/import, and palette synchronization support for QuarkXPress 8
    Benefit
    • AppSet automatically configures Quark 8 to use the new printer profiles when making prints increasing product ease of use and reducing the color management knowledge required by the user to achieve color accurate results.
    • Palette Synchronization automatically stores user created color palettes in the correct location so those palettes are automatically available for use within Quark. This feature makes integration seamless and easy for the user.
  7. New display profiling workflow which adds more advanced options, simplified process, and improved results – The changes to the display profiling are outlined below:
    a. Feature – Advanced mode now offers ability to optimize display luminance based on either an ambient light measurement or a user specified luminance value.
Benefit – Provides more precise control over setting the luminance level of their displays. Allows users to achieve the same luminance level on all of their displays for display-to-display color matching.
    b. Feature – Actual ambient light measurements and resulting optimum white luminance values of the display are now presented to the user.
Benefit – Allows user to see actual ambient light level of their work environment and the proposed display luminance value so they are better informed and can make any appropriate changes before they perform the calibration.
    c. Feature – Optimization of display contrast and brightness (backlight) workflow has been streamlined with a new automated contrast-clipping test where the user only has to adjust their contrast if the clipping test fails.
Benefit – Streamlined, easier, and faster workflow for the user.
    d. Feature – Target and actual measured luminance values are presented to user when adjusting display luminance.
Benefit – Provides more precise control over setting the luminance level of their displays. Allows users to achieve the same luminance level on all of their displays for display-to-display color matching.
    e. Feature – Video LUT adjustments will now achieve the display target luminance value to ensure more accurate results (user can choose to disable this feature in the application Preferences window).
Benefit – Provides more precise control over setting the luminance level of their displays. Allows users to achieve the same luminance level on all of their displays for display-to-display color matching.
    f. Feature – Allow users to change the display profile name before saving and applying the new profile.
Benefit – Provides users greater flexibility. Customer names can be assigned to profiles so users can easily change or switch between profiles for different ambient conditions and color temperatures.
  8. Feature – ICC Version 2 & 4 selection in application Preferences window (previous releases of ColorMunki software only had support for version 4 ICC profiles.)
Benefit – Provides increased workflow flexibility and support for software applications, printers, and printer drivers that do not currently support ICC v4 profiles.
  9. Feature – Expanded support for DDC enabled displays
Benefit – With ColorMunki’s expanded DDC support, the software can now automatically control even more displays and perform the display calibration process without any user intervention. User will not have to navigate confusing display controls to reach optimal contrast, color temperature, and luminance target values.
  10. Improved software installation process on Windows OS– We changed the Windows installer to check and verify if the correct versions of Microsoft .NET and Java are already installed on the users machine. If pre-installed versions of .NET and Java pass the verification, then ColorMunki software is promptly installed and the total installation time greatly reduced.
Benefit – Potentially much faster installation times on Windows.
