This page first set up after the 5D mk4 appeared, when we thought a good guestimate for the 5D5 – January 2020…
Since then Mirrorless has advanced a long way and it might be wondered if the 5DV might ever appear – Events of 2020 have probably reduced the chances of it happening
If we waited until we were absolutely sure about a comment or rumour, the pages would be a series of product announcements and not much more. We hope you enjoy it ;-) If you feel you need a dose of something more earnest and serious then do pay a visit to our (rumour free) article and reviews.

Canon 5D Mk5 rumours
The timeline has often been our best guide. The appearance of mirrorless probably signifies big changes

2020 July
20th A lot’s changed in the last few months and may well have hastened the removal of DSLRs from Canon’s product plans.
The updated timeline now has a lot of ‘last model’ lines, especially once a crop sensor EOS R model appears.
Add to this a suggestion [CR] that there will not be a 5D mk5 and it becomes clear that Canon sees mirrorless as the answer to your camera needs, and RF will do the same for your lens needs (along with adapter support that was never really possible for the FD->EF transition).
I’ve just finished a review of Nikon’s 19mm tilt shift lens and used a Z7 for the testing. Adding in my experience of the Panasonic S1R and my own EOS RP makes me more than happy to expect a mirrorless update for my 5Ds.
However, I suspect there are still a lot of people unsure of mirrorless (battery life is still one concern for some uses). Before the world events of 2020 I’d have seen it as a possible that Canon would make a ‘final’ 5D5 based on the R5, but now, I suspect not.
March
25th In an interview [TR], Canon UK confirms that the R5 is a ‘5 series’ camera.
With the R5 prelaunch and actual launch likely for April/May [latest R5 info], people have been wondering about a potential 5D mk5 again? Will we see the R5 get a mirror and appear as a last (gasp) DSLR? Canon will want to get as many people shifted to the R series as possible (all those new lenses) but a similarly specced 5D mkV could sell…
2019 October
14th After years of silence the possibility of a 5D mk5 is mentioned at [CR] – perhaps the 5D mk4 isn’t the end of the 5D line, although the likelihood of a 5Ds mk2 is somewhat less – this is a popular suggestion for a move to mirrorless [EOS RS page]
2016 August

July
30th Still no sign of a 5D4, so perhaps the 2012 suggestion of 2018 for the mk5 needs pushing back a bit.
2015 February
- 5th The imminent launch of the 5Ds (and r) raises interesting questions as to where the 5D line is headed, particularly with the suggestion that a 5D C and 5D mk IV will appear this year.
2012 March
- 3rd The 5D mark 3 was announced yesterday, so the mark 5 is perhaps 6 years away (2018)
- Hopefully by then, the page will be wider to take the full timeline below.
- How long will the 5D model line go on, will the XXXD line run out of numbers? Will we be on the EOS 950D by 2018
- I’m expecting at least 8k video, and maybe an electronic viewfinder – no, that’s too radical for only 6 Canon years ;-)
That’s it – Nothing here to see yet!
