October 20th The 1Dmk4 probably wraps up this year's Canon announcements, so no 60D until next year? September 2nd As the 7D specs are digested, there's much talk of whether the 7D -is- the 60D. No, we're told (thanks) that the xxD line is still being positioned as the move 'up' for xxxD owners. August 26th In a general update we hear that the 60D is on an 18 month cycle and won't appear until February - but in the mean time there's a new pro crop model (info on the 7D page) 60D Feb 2010. 50D like, but with an all new sensor emphasising low light performance. Upgraded AF (more points). Improved LV as per xD. DiGIC V. Focus on improving 'in-camera' image processing. Look for new interface aimed at offering much higher quality 'point&click' options in xxD and lower cameras. Canon is looking at better images for jpeg users ;-) 25th Whoops, sorry... it was news from last year - early September then ;-)
Same battery for the 50D/60D? An advert for a charger includes 60D compatibility [bicc]. 22nd The camera top image below is still getting a lot of comments about whether it's been photoshopped much. 60D fans saying it's obvious - 7D fans saying not :-) 21st New camera view at a Spanish store? Says FF, but looks xxD See 7D page 20th After yesterday's announcements, the rumour mill is definitely working overtime. The picture below was briefly posted on a Taiwan forum. The collection of buttons, and the location of the power switch (below the mode dial) are an interesting combination. Of course it could be the 7D? Note that the dial has no 'Scene' modes like the 50D does - if real - this moves me more to the 7D side :-) Some time ago we were told that Canon was looking at when (not if) to introduce a fold out LCD - time to get the power switch out of the way? Is it the top plate from a new camera? 60D or 7D - (a 3D would not have pop up flash ;-)
Here's the 50D for comparison
and here's the 5D Mk2 top
19th A whole slew of small Canon cameras are announced [DPR] Seems like a burst of 7D rumours erupted this morning - but if there was any DSLR announcement to be made, it might well have come at the same time as the point'n'click range was refreshed. No signs (12 noon UK) of any news or even the usual pre-announcement 'leak' on a Canon site somewhere. You can check out our info from this time last year, which was one of the more comprehensive sets of info we've been sent, covering this year and next.
12th We've had several comments (thanks) since the other day all saying that video performance was a key part the 60D specs. Most interesting was a comment as to how Canon's 'video people' have been given more input after the surprise success of the 5D Mk2 in the video area. 7th Better video for the 60D? On the Red user forum [Red] there was a message asking about video DSLRs. This interesting response. "If you are looking at DSLR you should wait. I had a conversation with a Canon rep during the DGA meet last weekend. He advised me to sell my T1i before the second week of September. Apparently there will be a new one coming out with 24p and , possibly, RAW video out from Canon. Priced around $1500. S35 sensor and Eos mount for use with all Canon glass." Note - an S35 sensor is similar size to the normal Canon crop (x1.6) sensor How about the 50D successor on the 19th of August, with the 1D3 replacement (new name not 1D Mk IV) for the 17th of September? [POTN] Add to this a slew of lenses... 5th How about an underwater housing already! [B&H] Probably an old one for a D60 ;-) 2nd It seems that you can already buy screen protectors for the 60D at Amazon. [product link] Guess it must be arriving soon then :-) July 31st We're told (thanks) that the 'feature' is being able to configure a button for MLU - well that would cheer up a few and leave the majority wondering why they would bother using it :-) BTW MLU is Mirror Lock Up 30th We've been sent assorted info for the 60D and 7D [thanks] 60D
No idea what the 'secret feature' is. We've had comments about a fold out LCD and in body IS being tested for some time, but who knows... As ever, usual rumours caveats apply to stuff we were just sent! Meanwhile, some quite detailed specs have appeared at CR with
Looks like a more detailed version of what we were sent, with the exception of the dual card slot, which just happened to appear today in the Nikon D300s... 14th In a blurring of the lines, will the 60D be a 7D or vice versa. See poss. 1.3x crop and 'pro x1.6 crop' info on the 7D page July 7th We've had a comment [thanks] that the 60D will actually remain CF, not a SD card. June 13th Aug 25th for 60D and 1D4? [CR] 7th We're told (thanks) to expect the 60D and 1D4 announcements in August, although no specs supplied. At CR there is another spec list for the 60D
May 28th Some suggestions for 60D features [CR]
The MkII reference covers the difficulties of adding 24 fps support in the 5D2. It will be interesting to see how many of the features suggested to us last year about Canon sensor developments finally do appear in the 60D. Look on 60D high ISO performance as a strong marker for performance from a 30MP plus 1Ds4 at its highest ISO settings (although potentially with improved pixel binning at the hardware level). 22nd A cashback scheme for the 50D in Japan. Most likely to move inventory, rather than suggesting that a replacement is close. 3rd A flip out display? We've had mentions of this several times in the past, along with the comment that it wouldn't happen until 'the market' warranted it. We're now told (thanks) that it's slated first for the 2000D and then the 60D. As to when? still suggesting that the 60D is on an 18 month cycle (see Feb. below). Or is it? An Autumn release for the 60D along with 15.1MP, 1080p video at 30 fps, Updated AF system, 8fps, External microphone input and Digic V is suggested at CR April 12th Mentioned on an HDR site - 8fps. More on the 70D page (12.5fps), including the note that anyone can submit an update to the page ;-) 10th A new AF system for the 60D? [CR] The next 1D will certainly have a different AF system (even if not as different as marketing would like ;-) so expect this to feed into AF designs elsewhere in the range. Elsewhere [DPR], there are suggestions that it may be time for an improved JPEG standard to be available. March 25th The 500D is announced, and the specs suggest that a 50D makeover (video for instance) could easily be moved up in the schedules. We're told that 500D/50D sales will be the key to this. It's well worth a re-read of some of the info from earlier on this page. 9th At CR there is the suggestion that the 60D (or some other new camera) will appear this autumn. One of our longer lived sources still puts this as only an outside bet at the moment. February 28th From our main rumours page The launch timing is 'up for discussion' but internal pressures at Canon are to put it back on an 18 month cycle. This from the weaker overall demand and reduction in competitive pressure. The design is advanced and allows for a possible August/ September 2009 release but is 90+% likely to be delayed until January / February 2010 (18 month cycle) 22nd How long to wait for the 60D? We've a roundup of various update estimates for different cameras we've been sent on the main camera rumours page. Suggestions for the 60D were that the 50D/60D cycle would move to at least 18mths (making it a 2010 camera). 2009 January 29th At CR it's suggested that the '60D' may be branded as the '7D'
Does have a bit of a 'wish list' feel to it ;-) ...But not dissimilar to what we were told in September. Interestingly, this could signal a move of the 1.6x APS-C sensor into a higher end model. If a 500D is announced beforehand, it will be interesting to see its specs compared to the 50D 2008 December 19th According to CR 50D sales are not going so well (the 40D is a real bargain at the moment) There is the suggestion that the 60D will move to better AF and finally some decent weather sealing. I note there's not been much on the 60D front since our big update back in September (from before the 5D2 announcement) October 3rd From a Canon interview [see 7D page]
2008 September 3rd Another update from some of our 'closer to Canon' sources ;-) A note to new readers - We've been keeping tabs on (mostly) Canon related rumours for several years and receive all kinds of stuff - some more believable than others. Use your common sense when reading it and remember that it's here for entertainment as much as anything else. If we waited until we were absolutely sure (or even 80% Bob ;-) about a comment or rumour, the pages would be a series of product announcements and not much more. We hope you enjoy it ;-) A current candidate feature set for the 60D (based on a 12 month release schedule) includes:
The 12 month release not absolutely certain yet but is likely, given the expected aggressive Nikon and Sony product cycles. The 70D would be Digic V and feature a higher MP sensor, more upgrades to image processing algorithms plus whatever whistles and bells development can come up with (inbuilt WiFi, remote control etc.) Canon feel they can comfortably do a 18MP or even 21MP sensor (53MP FF equiv) for the 60D if needed based on market pressures. Currently, this is not expected for the next update. Future sensors... 3 or 4 years out. Even with pixel binning Canon believe there is a point where more MP don’t make sense as they pixels are starting to get small relative to the wavelengths of light etc. creating all sorts of undesirable effects. They expect to max out in the 50-65MP for a FF camera and a 21 to 25 MP range for crop. The market is likely to push them more to the upper end of the range and their DIGIC planning is on track to deliver the data and image processing rates. In a few generations of camera, expect a 24-25MP 1.6 crop giving 12MP and 6MP pixel binned images. While the 64/65MP FF at the same pixel density can offer 32, 16 and 8MP pixel binned images as well as dynamic cropping to 1.3 etc. After this effective ending of the MP race, Canon sees plenty of room for development in improved sensor technology and imagine processing algorithms. Beyond the 1D... Did I hear EVF? Canon acknowledges the need to push many more pro-style features into the next range down. This is directly based on Nikon's moves with the D300 and D700. This has encouraged Canon to begin a ground up re-think of just what else a professional camera needs to differentiate itself (other than rugged build etc.) as 'professional' There are a number of Canon experimental bodies with separate electronic viewfinders (EVF) using high resolution screens (much higher than the current ones in the new cameras) These screens are movable to be viewable from the top or back (like medium format). The cameras also support dynamic crop modes, with the electronic viewfinder adjusting accordingly. This includes both 1.3 from FF plus 4:3 and 6:4.5 The bodies are also a significant redesign from the current 1D series form factor. [Remember that many options get tried in these experimental cameras, before moving to full designs - remember the on again/off again Canon MF development -KC] Other potential professional series goodies/essentials/needless frippery [fill in your choice ;-) -KC] are, full two way remote control (all major camera functions such as ISO and metering) and built-in WiFi and GPS (built in - integrated). There is still interest in slide in/out mini hard drives (solid state or moving) to give several hundred GB storage. Feedback from Canon's tame 'professionals' has been generally very positive towards the features ;-) The market shifts Canon keeps a eye on the both the growth in the DLSR market share and relative market shares in specific segments. A key observation that has caught Canon’s attention is the shift over the last 12 months in two key 'pro'/'semi-pro' segments which are relatively fixed in size now (most professional photographers are already on DSLRs) 1 Wedding / Family / Interior Photographers.
The Canon response The 5D replacement is a very targeted countermeasure aimed at the D700 and inspirational D3 sales. Canon have gone for MP, low ISO, lots of pro features and some additional 'whistle and bells' here to retain and attract the market. [No, surely no MLU button - KC ;-) ] The 5D replacement is also designed to be an easy step up for current XXD owners, preserving lens investments etc. The 50D targeted as a low cost D300 competitor Canon have a second FF coming too to further cover this market. In terms of lenses the 24-70 F2.8 L IS is ready and work is under way on a 14-24 competitor (with 12-24 and filters being the target) 2 Sports / Press Photographers
The Canon response Bringing forward the upgrades of the 1D series by a market surprising amount. Major redesign of the Autofocus system for their next pro series cameras (ongoing) Design work on a rethink of the whole pro series body and features while still keeping a sports focus and a studio focus in terms of market. Lenses Canon have been working on a number of parallel paths for lens design:
Canon have upped their new lens design capability from 2 to 3 a year (this is significant in the amount of resources required) and are looking at 4 as a peak over the next few years. No surprise with the long awaited 24-70 IS F2.8 (Canon acknowledged that the current one was showing its limitation on the 1Ds III. Though many will be surprised with the new 35L and 24L.) Canon do not currently have many plans for the non L series primes, with most consumers in that market going for zooms or aspiring to a L series zoom. Given the need to do so much with the rest of the lens range over the next 3-4 years, don't hold your breath waiting for a a new 50/1.4 or the like. August 30th Future technology? As well as the older info (see under the table below) we were sent some updated info from the same sources. The full text is on the 5D2 page however if the 1.6 crop sensor were to be based on the 50MP FF technology, then it would come out round the 19.5MP mark. Look for extensive use of pixel binning to make use of all those MP at high ISO. Of course, if we're on a 1 year cycle now, the 20MP crop sensor might not come until the 70D ;-) 26th The 50D is released - table below updated. Next August for the 60D or was the 50D just moved ahead for competition reasons? Well... there is a 60D thread at DPR already discussing this ;-) 21st The 40D to 50D update is compared to the 20D/30D update in a post from someone who claims to have used one [DPR] - first mention of a 60D we see :-) July 8th Is a 40D refresh being moved from the expected 18 month cycle (we'll see it at PMA in 2009) or will new sensor technology make it into the 50D for Photokina [potn] Whilst I've been sent various info on the new sensor developments, the only line that was slated for potentially moving to annual updates was the bottom end of the DSLR range. Meanwhile here's the recent history of similar models
Some recent info (originally on our 1Ds3 page) about Canon's plans over the next few years was sent in August 2007 (shortly before the 40D was actually announced)
