Canon EF16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens

A collection of information and links for Canon's new EF lenses

Warning, this page does contain rumours from the internet - take them with a suitably large pinch of salt!

Other info and stuff on this site

The What's New Page gives a quick overview of the hundreds of pages of articles and picture on this site.

This page is part of the Reviews feature in our Articles and info section

Our main Canon rumours page is for the replacement for the 1Ds Mk2 although we are also starting to collect info on Canon's possible move into medium format (not a high probability at the moment, but who knows)

Latest articles (not rumours... :-) on our site: >> Pinnacle Photo Oyster paper- A review of a new Lustre finish paper from a local supplier, tested while we were looking for a good economic paper for our commercial decorative prints, rather than some of the Fine Art papers we normally use. Info and reviews

There is an excellent review at the the-digital-picture.com

I've also heard an interesting suggestion that the lens at 16mm is noticeably less sharp at 16mm compared with 17mm - as ever be wary of single lens tests, but worth knowing about...

EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM

Ultra-Wide Zoom

Item Code: 1910B002

Available in April 2007

The EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM is a high performance, water-resistant, and ultra wide-angle Canon L-series lens.

It has been specifically designed for improved edge-to-edge image quality that will meet the strict requirements of professional and high-end amateur photographers.

It features 3 high-precision aspherical lens elements, each of a different type: ground, replica and GMo for even better image quality than the original EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM.

The circular aperture produces a beautiful and natural background blur when shooting at wider apertures.

Other features include internal focusing, a ring type USM (Ultra Sonic Monitor), and new AF algorithms for fast and quiet autofocusing.

EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM – Superior image quality

Canon’s engineers have completely redesigned the optics on the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM to deliver higher contrast levels and improved resolving power. To ensure corner-to-corner sharpness and contrast throughout the focal range, the lens includes three types of aspherical lens elements (ground, replicated and glass moulded). Two UD lens elements virtually eliminate chromatic aberration, while Super Spectra lens coatings suppress flare and ghosting.

Rapid auto focus is driven by a virtually silent Ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) incorporating Canon’s latest auto focus algorithms. Full-time mechanical manual focus override is also provided. As with all L-series lenses, the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM is weather sealed to protect against dust and moisture.

A new 82mm Protect filter for the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM has been released to coincide with today’s launch.

Features

L-series construction and optics
f/2.8 aperture throughout zoom range
Fast, quiet auto focus
Aspherical and UD lens elements
Super Spectra coatings
Circular aperture for excellent bokeh
Passes distance information to E-TTL II
Soft case and lens hood
The professional’s ultra wide-angle zoom.

L-series quality
The lens embodies Canon's highest standards of L-series optics, build quality, reliability and operability. A robust construction includes dust and moisture resistant seals to protect against harsh weather conditions.

Constant f/2.8 aperture
A fast f/2.8 aperture delivers impressive low light performance and depth-of-field control. The aperture is fixed over the full focal range, allowing photographers to maintain a constant fast shutter speed when zooming.

Fast, quiet auto focus
A ring USM (Ultrasonic Motor) drives extremely rapid auto focus with near-silent operation. Full time mechanical manual focus override is available without having to switch out of AF. The lens offers a minimum focusing distance of 0.28m throughout the zoom range.

Good background bokeh
A circular barrel aperture helps to create attractive, even background bokeh when isolating subjects at wide apertures.

UD and aspherical elements
The EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM incorporates three aspherical elements to ensure corner-to-corner sharpness and clarity throughout the focal range. Two UD (Ultra Low Dispersion) elements virtually eliminate chromatic aberrations.

Super Spectra coatings
Super Spectra lens coatings suppress flare and ghosting - more prone to occur with digital cameras due to reflection off the image sensor. Coatings also help maintain accurate colour balance and high contrast.

Passes distance information to E-TTL II
The lens passes distance information back to the camera's E-TTL II flash system for consistently accurate flash metering.

Accessories
The EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM lens comes supplied with a lens hood and soft case.
